Nest box summary
shows dip in young bird numbers

by Rod Kebble

The 2012 Pierrepont Farm nest box summary shows that there was a sharp drop in the numbers of young birds this spring, due to the wet weather.

A number of nest boxes contained only incomplete nests, which never had eggs laid in them.

The survey of nest boxes, conducted on 17th May, also showed that the purpose-built barn owl box on Wey Top Path continues to be used by mandarin, with 13 eggs found — all of which were unfortunately cold. The stock dove box contained 5 mandarin eggs and 1 stock dove egg.

The three house martin nests erected on the front of the dairy early in March — not included in the survey — have not been occupied.

Nestbox #X4 remained unused this spring. In 2010 and 2011 it housed blue tit nests.
