Swift boxes to adorn clock tower from today

by Rod Kebble

The clock tower at the Countryside Restoration Trust's Pierrepont Farm.

A swift solution to the housing problem? First-time nesters are being offered starter homes in this high rise development with extensive country views. Unfurnished.

Breaking news: Tuesday 11th September should see the installation of swift boxes in the clock tower that disguises the feed silo in front of Pierrepont’s new dairy.

CRT monitoring officer, Vince Lea, and CRT volunteer Brian Lavers will attempt to install the boxes and a set of speakers, probably by using a cherry-picker, as nobody has yet found a way to climb up the inside of the tower — let alone a safe way.

The speakers will broadcast the sound of young swifts at the appropriate time, in order to encourage other birds to built their nests in the tower’s boxes.

With any luck, Brian will remember to take his camera and we hope to publish his photos here soon.
