Woodlands Jersey Beef wins CIWF commendation

by Rod Kebble

Woodlands Jersey Beef, which is the company run by Jane and Paul Denley that buys male calves from Pierrepont Farm, collected a prize last week at the Compassion In World Farming’s 6th annual Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards, held at the Honourable Artillery Company in the City of London.

The business picked up a Good Calf Commendation for the way in which it grows-on calves that in former years would have been slaughtered at birth, keeping them in humane conditions for two years.

Other prizewinners included Jamie Oliver (for higher welfare chicken products), Premier Foods, KFC and McDonald Hotels and Resorts (all for using cage-free eggs), Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Prêt À Manger (Good Pig Awards).

Good Food Nation (Good Egg and Good Dairy winners) and The Hummingbird Bakery (Good Egg winner) were — alongside Woodlands Jersey Beef — smaller companies that won awards.

Sainsbury’s won the inaugural Leadership & Innovation in Retail award for its Pig Concept Farm.
