Pierrepont Farm
wildlife monitoring report July 2011

Introduction
A survey was carried out in the Wey Meadow SSSI to obtain a diversity count which could be compared to previous and future surveys to determine if diversity is being maintained or lost.

A butterfly count was also carried out in the Wey Meadow.

Methods
The percentage of each individual species of vascular plant was recorded in a total of six randomly chosen one metre square quadrats.

The butterfly count was simply the number of each species recorded as caught/seen.

Results
Those for the vascular plant species are shown in the table below.

Notes
¹ % cover within a 1 metre square quadrat frame for each species/genus.
² indicates a plant that has only been identified by genus.

Also noted but outside of the recording areas were: knapweed and sneezewort (vascular plants), plus bog brush cricket and Roselle’s bush cricket (insecta).

Simpson’s Index of Diversity, D= Σn(n-1)/N(N-1) = 48920/(905×904) = 48920/818120 = 0.06

Using Simpson’s Reciprocal Index of Diversity, 1/D, Diversity= 1.00/0.06 = 16.67

Results for the butterfly count are shown below.
