Pierrepont Farm
wildlife monitoring report April 2011

Introduction
An interrupted belt transect was carried out in Tankersford Copse: a total of seven one-square metre quadrats were surveyed and the number of each species were counted in order to calculate a diversity index.

Notes
¹indicates a plant that has only been identified by genus.
²indicates an aggregate species.

Simpson’s Index of Diversity, D= Σn(n-1)/N(N-1) = 82582/(840×839) = 82584/704760 = 0.117

Using Simpson’s Reciprocal Index of Diversity, 1/D, Diversity= 1.00/0.117 = 8.55, where number of species present was 17.

Conclusions
This represents a slightly lower diversity than a similar transect carried out in March 2010 but is not significantly so (not subject to statistical analysis). Overall, the diversity of ground flora within the chestnut coppice of Tankersford Copse is “on track”.
